Over the years UPMO has successfully contributed to increasing availability of a range of quality services to women, children, Adolescents and men through building capacity and support for its members and accessing them to quality supplies.
UPMO, which has grown significantly over the last 50 years, has attracted recognition, support and partnership locally (from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour, Gender and Social Development) and Internationally (International Confederation of Midwives and International Confederation of Nurses).
It has also built capacity over the years to be able to build skills and support its members and other organizations.

International Day of the Midwife – 5th May 2006
Members of UPMO spearheaded the function. It was held at Mukono Resort Hotel, Mokono town. Many midwives countrywide and other distinguished guests joined UPMO members to mark the day. The Guest of Honour was Hon. Major General Caleb Akandwanaho (Salim Saleh) Minister of Microfinance. He praised the midwives for being organised and for serving their communities.
World Population Day – 11th July 2006 in Soroti
Representatives from UPMO joined other Ugandans to mark the mark the day.
National Women’s Day 8th March 2006
Members of UPMO joined other women to celebrate the day, made stalls showing other women that they also contribute to their development and they have a critical role of saving lives of women and babies.
2004: Has received grant from UPHOLD where a Branch Coordinator and
Capacity Building Specialist have been recruited, Regional Representative Programme is funded, Service Quality Assessment and Community Perception are going to be carried out and several training updates will be carried out.
AIM Programme – Provided a Computer to head office. A District Liaison Officer has been recruited. Branch Chairpersons were trained in proposal writing and Branch Treasurers have been trained in Financial Management. Monitoring and Evaluation system was introduced in UPMO plus networking of all head office computers.
Population Services International (PSI) – Uganda is funding PUR® (Water Purifier) Project where midwives are taught how to purify water using the above product. The trained midwives then conduct outreaches to train communities to purify their drinking water using the above product.
2003 Has advised other Midwifery Associations in development of Private Services. Midwives from Kenya, Tanzania, Senegal and Zimbabwe have visited the organization and individual maternities and have desired the way we operate.

Global fund for Women funded the Organisation to assist its members to carry out outreach programmes in their respective districts.
Policy II funded members of UPMO to carry out a Study on the Impact the quality of health services in public sector.
UPMO is on the drafting committee of the Public-Private Partnership Policy
UPMO trained six regional representatives in Life Saving Skills funded by UNFPA.
UPMO presented a paper at the Reproductive Health Symposium
Ministry of Health together with CMS is funding training of members in Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI)
2002 Developed a regional representatives supervisory programme where trained midwives in supervisory skills carry out support supervision to their fellow midwives.
Family Care International (FCI) trained forty eight (48) midwives in Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health.
2001 Received a donation of three vehicles and two computers from CMS and UNFPA.
Twenty-four midwives were trained in Norplant Implant Insertion by DISH Project
Eighty two (82) midwives were trained in Post Abortion Care funded by Ipas-Nairobi
2000 UPMO is operating a loan fund, which is a revolving fund, and midwives access these loans to improve on their maternities and to buy drugs and equipment from Uganda Microfinance Union through CMS.
1999 Acquired land and constructed a model health centre at Kansanga which serves as an income-generating activity.
1998 to date UNFPA funds the life saving skills program where member midwives are trained in both clinical and community life saving skills. This program trained 10 trainers who are sometimes utilized by Ministry of Health and World Health Organisation. UNFPA donates bicycles to assist midwives with transport to the community.
1995 Hosted ICM Symposium in January where midwives presented papers on reproductive health services.
Acquired land and constructed UPMO headquarter offices.
1994 Participated in Somarc project in Market Day Midwives Program where members midwives used to sell Protector Condom, Pilplan and Injectaplan to market vendors on market days.
1993 UPMO became a registered NGO
1992 Got a donation of 150 bicycles from Royal College of Midwives U.K. through ICM
1991 Recognised nationally and internationally as a member of ICM and NAWOU.
1991 Received technical assistance from American College of Nurse-Midwives through SEATS I project.
Through SEATS I ,136 project midwives were trained in basic family planning, 33 trained in supervisory skills and 30 trained in business skills.
