BRIEFLY ABOUT UGANDA PRIVATE MIDWIVES ORGANISATION |
UPMO originally UPMA (Uganda Private Midwives Association) is a non-governmental/non-profit making organization comprising of over 2000 midwives nationwide rendering reproductive health and primary health services in their individual maternity homes as well as a variety of community health activities.
UPMO was established in 1948 by twelve enrolled midwives.
It has grown steadily during the past 58 years and todate it is a country wide organisation rendering a variety of services and activities.
Membership is open to all practicing self-employed midwives. A valid working permit is a requirement. This is obtained from the Registrar of Nurses and Midwives Council, the governing body overseeing nurses and midwives in Uganda. Permits are renewed before the end of March each year.
Members pay an annual subscription fee to the Organisation, which is used to partly offset UPMO’s operating costs.

UPMO is committed to supplement Governments efforts in provision of high quality, accessible, affordable, integrated Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS/PMTCT, primary health care through private midwives and promotion of women rights in Uganda .
Though midwives are working privately they have to abide with rules and regulations as per midwives handbook 2001 and the Clinical Guidelines produced by the Ministry of Health. Midwifery Standards from Ministry of Health are available at UPMO offices, and these guide the supervisors to scrutinize quality of care.
- To supplement government efforts in HIV prevention and HIV/AIDS/PMTCT service provision.
- To intensify the provision and utilization of the integrated Primary Health Care and Reproductive Health services.
- To maintain and strengthen the provision of decentralized quality care services.
- To enhance sustained organizational development and management.
- To promote and get involved in scientific research.
- To intensify the development of partnerships and enhance networking
- UPMO members conducting a community outreach, one of the service delivery approaches
- To intensify fundraising for expansion.
- To develop a training centre for the UPMO members and the surrounding community at Mengo
- To ensure a standardized level of quality provision of reproductive health care services by private midwives.
- To continue liaising with Ministry of Health and other organizations.
- To strengthen district branch offices.
- To increase the scope of work and coverage through various projects.
- To recruit more members into the Organization.
- More involvement in research and development.
